How We Enhanced Network Coverage at Beacon Adhesive’s New Warehouse

Discover how Arsenal Computing transformed Beacon Adhesive's warehouse network, ensuring seamless connectivity and enhanced productivity with a tailored solution.
In the fast-paced world of logistics and supply chain management, having a reliable and robust network is crucial. Beacon Adhesive, a New York-based company, recently faced significant challenges when they acquired a new warehouse in Farmington, Connecticut. Despite their efforts, the network coverage in the warehouse was insufficient, leading to operational delays and inefficiencies. This case study outlines how we at Arsenal Computing, a managed service provider (MSP), addressed and resolved Beacon Adhesive’s network issues, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout their facility.

1. Initial Consultation and Site Visit

Our journey with Beacon Adhesive began with an email requesting our services to assess their current network setup. Understanding the urgency, we offered a complimentary one-hour consultation and scheduled a same-day visit to their warehouse. Upon arrival, it became evident that the warehouse did not have a proper network infrastructure. They relied solely on a Comcast business modem and a mobile backup modem, which were inadequate for their operational needs.
During the visit, we conducted a thorough assessment of the facility. We took measurements of the warehouse, noted the layout, and evaluated the existing network infrastructure. The warehouse was extensive, with numerous dead zones where the Wi-Fi signal failed to reach, severely impacting the productivity of their operations.
We also spent time educating the President of Beacon Adhesive about the importance of a robust network setup, especially for critical functions like managing warehouse operations, printers, and phones. It was crucial for them to understand that their current setup was not sufficient and that a comprehensive network solution was needed to ensure seamless connectivity throughout the facility.

2. Identifying the Problem and Proposed Solutions

After our initial assessment, it became evident that the primary issue was the reliance on a single Comcast business modem and a backup modem. The backup modem, which was currently running, was not delivering the required signal strength due to the poor cellular signal in Farmington. This setup was unsuitable for the warehouse's needs, as there was no Wi-Fi coverage in the main working areas, leaving workers unable to access orders and essential online resources.

To address these issues, we proposed a comprehensive network solution tailored to Beacon Adhesive’s needs. Our solution included:

  • A UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM Pro) to serve as the network controller and security gateway.
  • 6 Wi-Fi 6 Long Range Access Point for extensive coverage in the warehouse.
  • A standard Wi-Fi 6 Access Point for the office area.
  • A UniFi switch with PoE (Power over Ethernet) to power the access points and provide additional Ethernet ports for printers and other devices.

3. Implementation of the Network Solution

With the solution plan approved, we began the implementation process. The first step was to coordinate with Comcast to address the faulty modem. We scheduled a technician visit and attended to ensure a seamless transition. Meanwhile, we started the installation of the new network equipment.
The installation process took approximately three days, primarily due to wiring complications and the need to replace some non-functional cables. We positioned the Wi-Fi 6 Long Range Access Point strategically to cover the entire warehouse, eliminating all previous dead zones. In the office area, the standard Wi-Fi Access Point was installed to ensure stable and fast internet for the administrative staff.
Additionally, we installed a UniFi switch with PoE in the warehouse, providing power to the access points and offering Ethernet connectivity for printers and other devices that required a wired connection.

4. Results and Client Satisfaction

Upon completing the installation, we conducted a series of tests to ensure the network was functioning optimally. The results were outstanding. The entire warehouse now had robust Wi-Fi coverage, with no dead zones. The office area also experienced improved connectivity, enhancing overall productivity.
Beacon Adhesive’s team was highly satisfied with the results. The seamless network coverage allowed their workers to efficiently access orders and necessary online tools, significantly improving their workflow. The backup modem issues were resolved, and the new network setup provided a reliable and high-speed connection, ensuring their operations could run smoothly even if the primary connection faced issues.

5. Conclusion

This project highlights the importance of having a well-designed network infrastructure, especially in large facilities like warehouses. At Arsenal Computing, we pride ourselves on delivering tailored solutions that meet our clients' specific needs. By addressing the unique challenges faced by Beacon Adhesive, we were able to enhance their network coverage, ensuring seamless connectivity and improved operational efficiency.
